Gasper: A Collaborative Writing Mode for Avoiding Blind Modifications

In the last years network connectivity continuously expanded. However, existing collaborative environments were not designed to benefit from the fact that users are connected most of the time. For example, Wiki or version control systems allow users to work in isolation, but they tolerate blind modifications. For instance, users may concurrently perform the same task or they might work on obsolete versions of shared documents. We propose a novel writing mode for avoiding blind modifications by providing real-time information about group activities. Changes performed concurrently are filtered according to user privacy preferences and depicted in their local documents. Key-words: CSCW, Collaborative writing, Blind modifications, Awareness, Synchronous interaction, Asynchronous interaction Gasper: Un mode d’écriture collaborative pour prévenir les modifications en aveugle Résumé : Dûe à la croissance de la connectivité réseau durant ces dernières années, les utilisateurs sont la plupart du temps connectés. Malheureusement, les environnements d’édition collaborative n’ont pas été conçus pour bénéficier de cette connectivité quasi permanente. Ainsi, les systèmes collaboratifs tels que les Wikis ou les gestionnaires de versions permettent à leurs utilisateurs de travailler en isolation, mais dans ce cas, les utilisateurs effectuent des modifications en aveugle, i.e. les utilisateurs peuvent réaliser en parallèle la même tâche ou ils peuvent travailler sur des versions obsolètes des documents partagés. Nous proposons un nouveau mode d’intéraction permettant d’éviter les modifications en aveugle. Ce nouveau mode repose sur l’envoi en temps-réel d’information de conscience de groupe concernant les activités effectuées en parallèle par les membres du groupe. Les modifications réalisées en concurrence par les autres utilisateurs sont dans un premier temps filtrées selon des règles afin de préserver l’intimité et la confidentialité des utilisateurs. Puis, elles sont utilisées pour annoter les copies locales des documents détenues par les autres utilisateurs.
